Dead Island 2 is Dambuster Studios' long-awaited entry in Deep Silver's beloved zombie-slaying franchise — and one of the most triumphant turnarounds in recent game development history. After over eight years in development across multiple studios, Dambuster took the reins in 2019 and delivered a game that exceeded expectations: a confident, gory, sun-drenched romp through a quarantined Los Angeles overrun by the undead. Built on Unreal Engine 4, it launched in April 2023 to strong reviews and immediate commercial success. We contributed to Dambuster's production pipeline across multiple asset categories — props, weapons, and vehicles — supporting the team as they built out the world of HELL-A.
Dead Island 2 is defined by its bold, irreverent visual identity, where exaggerated design and grounded realism exist side by side. Every asset needed to capture that balance while feeling authentic to the world Dambuster Studios had created.
Props, weapons, and vehicles all had to share the same visual language while meeting the unique gameplay and storytelling requirements of each asset category.
Weapons demanded exceptional attention to detail, as players interact with and inspect them constantly throughout gameplay. Every surface, silhouette, and material transition needed to hold up under close scrutiny.
Every asset had to integrate seamlessly into an established AAA production pipeline, matching existing technical standards, material workflows, and the visual quality expected throughout the project.
Working as an external development partner, Three Colonist supported Dead Island 2 with production-ready asset creation across multiple disciplines, delivering work that aligned with Dambuster Studios' artistic vision and AAA production standards.
AAA Pipeline Integration — Delivered production-ready assets that integrated seamlessly into Dead Island 2's established art direction, technical standards, and production workflow.
Environmental Storytelling — Props reinforced the visual identity of a quarantined Los Angeles, balancing grounded realism with the exaggerated personality that defines the Dead Island universe.
Gameplay-Driven Weapons — Weapons were built for constant player interaction, where silhouette, material definition, and surface wear needed to remain readable during gameplay and close-up inspection.
We developed production-ready props that reinforced Dead Island 2's distinct vision of post-outbreak Los Angeles. From abandoned storefronts to makeshift survivor spaces, every asset helped communicate a world shaped by collapse while supporting exploration and gameplay.
Weapons sit at the center of Dead Island 2's melee-focused combat. We produced assets designed to remain visually readable during fast-paced gameplay while delivering the material definition, wear, and mechanical fidelity expected during close-up inspection.
Vehicle assets extended the game's environmental storytelling, supporting the visual language of a city abandoned in crisis. Every model was built to integrate naturally into the world while maintaining the artistic and technical quality expected of a modern AAA production.
